With the formal release of the Common Core Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics, TESOL supports the initiative by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association (NGA) to develop a common core of state standards that prepare U.S. students for college- and career-readiness, and success in the global economy.

TESOL and its Arizona affiliate AZ-TESOL have great concerns about this teacher English fluency evaluation initiative and its impact upon English language learners. Nonnative English-speaking educators should not be singled out because of their native language, nor evaluated based on arbitrary standards of language fluency.

The Board of Directors of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL), is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Rosa Aronson as TESOL’s new Executive Director, effective April 19, 2010. Dr. Aronson succeeds Mr. Charles S. Amorosino, Jr., who retired on March 28 at the close of the 44th Annual TESOL Convention & Exhibit in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, having served in the position since 1998.

(TESOL), will honor Massachusetts State Representative Jeffrey Sánchez at the opening plenary of its 44th Annual Convention and Exhibit in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. TESOL joined 14 other national academic and professional societies in co-signing "One Faculty Serving All Students", and issue brief published by the Coalition on the Academic Workforce. The issue brief discusses principles of fair employment for part-time faculty and post-secondary institutions.

At the end of July, the U.S. Department of Education published proposed regulations for the Race to the Top grant program, which was funded as part of the economic stimulus package. TESOL submitted comments on the proposed regulations about the impact upon English language learners and educators.

- TESOL Co-Hosts First Global SpellEvent Championship (August 2009)
On August 10, 2009, TESOL and Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc. cohosted the Global SpellEvent Championship in New York City. The culmination of 18 months of planning, the event saw student participants from seven different countries competing in an English spelling competition for a grand prize of US$10,000.

Franklin Electronic Publishers Incorporated announces it will host its First Annual Global SpellEvent Championship in cooperation with TESOL on Monday, August 10, 2009 at the Jumeirah Essex House Hotel in New York City. Seven countries will be represented at this first competition of its kind.

TESOL wrote a letter in support of the Strengthen and Unite Communities with Civics Education and English Skills Act (S 1478/HR 3249), a bill that would provide much needed resources for adult ESL and civics education in the United States. TESOL has written a letter of support for the Adult Education and Economic Growth Act of 2009 (HR 3238/S 1468), a bill that would bring needed improvements to the adult education system in the United States, including critical enhancements for adult ESL programs. The attached includes letters to sponsors in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
- TESOL Lobbies Capitol Hill for Adult ESL (July 2009)
On June 24, 2009, 22 TESOL members representing 18 U.S.-based affiliates met in Washington, D.C., to lobby for adult English as a second language (ESL) on TESOL Advocacy Day 2009. Featuring issue briefings and workshop, the event was capped by visits to U.S. Congress. By the end of the day, TESOL members had visited the offices of more than 70 representatives and senators.

On May 5, Dr. Donna Kinerney, Instructional Dean, Adult ESOL & Literacy Programs at Montgomery College in Wheaton, Maryland, USA testified before the Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness Subcommittee in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State requested public feedback on a proposed online English language program targeted towards learners in other countries. TESOL submitted its comments, noting concern about the potential impact of such a program on intensive English programs.

- TESOL co-signs letter opposing Title III grant administration restructuring (October 2008; PDF)
In June 2008, the US Department of Education announced that it was restructuring the administration of the Title III grants under No Child Left Behind so that it would be combined with the Title I office effective the fall of 2008. (It previously was administered in the Office of English Language Acquisition.) TESOL co-signed this letter with other leading education groups expressing its objections to this restructuring.

- TESOL Responds to Passage of the Higher Education Opportunity Act (August 2008; PDF)
After significant delays, the U.S. Congress has passed H.R. 4137, the Higher Education Opportunity Act. This important legislation reauthorizes the Higher Education Act, and includes many positive outcomes geared towards improving teacher quality, including new graduate fellowships in bilingual education and second language acquisition. TESOL responded to the passage of this legislation with a letter to Congressional leaders thanking them for their efforts to pass this important legislation and including important initiatives for the TESOL field.

TESOL's letter of support for the Strengthening Communities through English and Integration Act, a new bill that would provide critically needed resources for ESL in the United States. The bill was introduced by Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA) and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY).

Wilga M. Rivers, a perennial member of TESOL and a recognized national and international authority on the psychological and linguistic aspects of language teaching, recently passed away, at the age of 88.

- Letter to Florida Gov. Crist Urging Veto of HB1219 (May 2007; 34 KB PDF)
The Florida legislature has passed a bill (HB1219/S2512) that will reduce the number of inservice ESOL training hours for reading teachers from 300 to 60 hours, in violation of a 1990 Office of Civil Rights Consent Decree. In support of Sunshine State TESOL, a letter was sent to Gov. Charlie Crist urging his veto of the bill.

- TESOL Congratulates winner of 2011 Global SpellEvent Championship
TESOL congratulates Hyun Soo Kim of South Korea for winning the Franklin Global SpellEvent Championship on August 10. The Championship, held in New York City, saw 24 competitors from 12 countries, each winners of local SpellEvents hosted by TESOL affiliates.
