The conference was organized by TESOL International Association in collaboration with University Partners in Doha, Qatar, and Qatar TESOL, TESOL Arabia, and other TESOL affiliates in the region.

The TESOL Conference on Putting Research Into Practice was a 3-day event where experts from across the region and around the world focused on three key areas of applied research in the field of English language teaching:

  • Understanding the "good language learner"
  • Bridging the gap between goals and results
  • Facilitating and supporting ongoing professional development

Featured speakers included Alister Cumming, Norbert Schmitt, Kassim Shaaban, Annamaria Pinter, Martin Bygate, Deena Boraie, Brian Paltridge, Bill Grabe, and Maggie Hawkins.

In addition to the conference in Qatar, TESOL convened the following online events in September and October 2011:

  • An online discussion for ELT professionals worldwide, 14 September–21 October to share ideas, questions, papers, and other resources on putting research into practice.

  • TESOL virtual seminars on applied research topics, including “Research: People, Practices, and Processes” (13 September, with Anne Burns), and “Integrating Language Variation into TESOL: Challenges from English Globalization” (13 October, with Walt Wolfram).
