In October 2001, The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) approved TESOL's performance-based standards for the preparation and licensure of ESL educators. The TESOL/NCATE standards for P-12 teacher education are divided into five domains: language, culture, instruction, assessment, and professionalism.
The TESOL/NCATE Standards for P-12 Teacher Education Programs address the need for consistency throughout the United States in how teachers are prepared to teach English as a second language (ESL) to children in P-12 schools.
This area of TESOL's website contains information on the P-12 teacher education standards, the program review process, and how TESOL members can become involved in the project.
