The part-time educators phenomenon has been around for a very long time and is all too common within the field of ESL across the United States, if not worldwide. School districts across the United States employ thousands of professional ESL instructors regularly, usually at low salaries and with reduced (if not absent) benefits. Citing the "cost-effectiveness" of such a system, these same districts defend the policy and continue to hire part-timers. Although they are as dedicated as their full-time colleagues, part-timers feel the pressure of underpay, little recognition, low morale, and stress from lack of job security. What can be done to address and improve the situation?

COPTEC Mission Statement

TESOL's Caucus on Part-time Employment Concerns (COPTEC) is dedicated to addressing the employment concerns of ESL professionals hired in educational institutions across the U.S. and around the world, particularly those hired as part-time, temporary, adjunct or contingent employees. COPTEC is dedicated to righting the inequities facing ESL professionals who hold less than full-time positions and to promoting the improvement of their working conditions. COPTEC advocates improved benefits, salary, job security, staff development opportunities and access to promotion to full-time, permanent, and/or tenure track employment for all ESL professionals.

Current TESOL members are encouraged to join one primary TESOL caucus at no cost. To add additional caucuses log in to the TESOL web site, click on My Communities and review options available to you. If you are a member of COPTEC and want to join the e-list, log into the web site and in the Member Toolbox click on My Communities.
