Abstract:
The Egal Shidad ELL Activities and accompanying project media (all available at http://newroutes.org/egal_ell_1) provide free tools for instructors to help adult learners develop knowledge and English skills related to mental health. Lessons rely on students viewing the Egal Shidad mental health video—thereby increasing exposure to the content—and then working on activities such as: listening to one of seven, short, downloadable clips of an English-speaking provider’s interview and identifying and discussing key vocabulary; engaging in dialogs based on conversations between characters in the video; reading English transcripts of a sheikh’s [a religious figure’s]and a mental health provider’s advice and answering comprehension questions; and completing cloze activities based on key points made in the video. Although these media and materials reference Somali cultural ideas and icons, many of the health literacy/language acquisition activities are relevant to other immigrant and ELLs.
