Serve on the 201​8–201​9 Standards Professional Council

TESOL International Association is seeking individuals to serve on the Standards Professional Council (SPC). The term for these appointments will be from 1 November 2018 to 31 October 2019, with the option to renew at the end of the appointment. The maximum continuous service period on the SPC is three years. To be eligible, you must be a member of TESOL International Association in good standing. 

About the Standards Professional Council

The Standards Professional Council (SPC) supports TESOL International Association in advancing the quality and expertise in the field of English language teaching through standards for teaching and learning. The Council advises the Association on strategy and supports the implementation of its strategic direction as it relates to standards. This is done by providing review and comment on educational standards that are relevant to the profession of English language teaching, and English learners, and English language teacher training, including TESOL standards, and raising the visibility and feasibility/practicality of the Association’s standards.

Expertise and Experience Needed

The SPC seeks the following attributes, experience, knowledge, and/or skills
  • Teaching experience in the field of ESL or TESOL
  • Knowledge of the needs of teachers and TESOL professionals
  • Knowledge and experience in working with educational standards
  • Specific knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following:
    • K-12 ESL education
    • Teacher preparation
    • Adult ESOL instruction
    • English as a foreign language
  • Familiarity with instructional standards for English learners in programs, which include K-12, adult and community college/university ESL instruction.
  • Ability and willingness to collect information on current developments in education as it pertains to English language teaching, English learners, and teacher preparation
  • Capacity to work with others, often in different time zones and locations around the globe, through emails and teleconferences
  • Clear verbal and written communication
  • Timeliness, with an adherence to deadlines

Commitment

  • Council members are expected to dedicate approximately 4-8 hours per month to the work of the Council. The number of hours may be more or less depending on the number of projects and their varying stages. 
  • Council members are expected to:
  • attend the annual TESOL International Convention (12–15 March 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA) if at all possible;
    • participate in the TESOL Leadership Briefing and the Council team meeting one day before the convention (12 March).
    • attend the Town Meeting (13 March) and the TESOL Annual Business Meeting (15 March) at the convention.
  • participate in quarterly conference calls.
  • actively participate in online discussions.
  • respond to occasional requests for comment and feedback on draft standards and other policy documents in a timely manner.
  • respond to queries from the Chair in a timely manner.
  • perform other tasks as necessary. 

Current Projects

The SPC is currently working on developing and implementing an audit process for the TESOL standards.
