TESOL Submits Comments Expressing Concern Over Proposed Citizenship Question on 2020 U.S. Census

by David Cutler | 08/07/2018
TESOL International Association submitted formal comments to the United States Department of Commerce expressing concern over the department's proposal to add a citizenship status question to the 2020 U.S. Census. TESOL commented that such a question would likely have a chilling effect on census participation and lead to an undercount of the population, which would negatively impact English learners. In addition to determining accurate representation in Congress, the results of the U.S. Census are used to allocate federal funding, such as those for K-12 and adult education programs that serve English learners.
