TESOL International Association Installs New President, Board Members

TESOL International Association, the trusted global authority for knowledge and expertise in English language teaching, recently installed Deborah Healey as its new president, along with three new board members, at the TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo, held 13–15 March 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Healey serves as Emeritus faculty at the University of Oregon, Oregon, USA. She will serve a one-year term as the association’s president. Healey has taught online teacher training courses for the American English Institute at the University of Oregon, primarily focusing on technology in education. She is a contributor to two TESOL Technology Standards publications and has presented extensively throughout the world. Her recent areas of research include gamification, language and identity in the Middle East, massive open online courses, and online teaching approaches.

Additionally, Deborah Short, Director and Founder of Academic Language Research & Training in Virginia, USA, was installed as president-elect. Previously, Short was a division director at the Center for Applied Linguistics, where she co-developed the SIOP Model for sheltered instruction. She has directed research and evaluation studies on English learners and their program designs.


Other newly installed board members include Grazzia Mendoza Chirinos, USAID Honduras, Honduras; Justin Shewell, Arizona State University, Arizona, USA; and Debra Suarez, U.S. Federal Government, District of Columbia, USA.

After serving as the association’s president, Luciana de Oliverira, University of Miami, Florida, USA, has moved to the post of past president.


TESOL recognizes the service and dedication of its officers and board members. Board members whose terms expired in March include: Ester de Jong, University of Florida, Florida, USA; Deborah Crusan, Wright State University, Ohio, USA; Silvia Laborde, Alianza Cultural Uruguay-Estados Unidos, Uruguay; and Shelley Taylor, Western University, Canada.
