Who Should Attend?
K-12 and adult English language teachers, administrators, teacher trainers, and any education professionals interested in enhancing their capacity to advocate on behalf of English learners and TESOL educators. Activities during this training will explore and examine advanced advocacy tips, tools, and exercises to help improve the influence and success of individual and group advocacy efforts.
More About This Event
Are you passionate and interested about advocating for English learners and English language educators? Have you attended the TESOL Advocacy and Policy Summit or other events wanting to take the next step in your advocacy efforts? This new and exclusive advocacy workshop will provide you with the necessary tools to take your advocacy efforts to the next level! For one full-day, learn about the different types of advocacy strategies, examine your own current advocacy efforts, and explore opportunities for growth, all in a small, intimate group of other enthusiastic TESOL advocates.
Immediately after this informative workshop, you will return to your school, program, or affiliate, ready to implement what you have learned and strengthen your advocacy strategies and efforts!
What Will I Learn?
Participants will acquire a deeper understanding of
- the different types of advocacy efforts and campaigns
- their current capacity to advocate for English learners
- leveraging social media to impact advocacy campaigns
- the role of various stakeholders when creating advocacy plans
- communicating with local, state and federal officials about issues critical to English learners and the TESOL profession.

- Wifi will be available for those bringing a tablet or laptop (encouraged, but not required)
About the Presenters
John Segota is the Associate Executive Director for Public Policy and Professional Relations at TESOL International Association. John's responsibilities at TESOL include government relations, policy analysis, media relations, and communications. John works closely with TESOL's senior leadership on policy management, strategic planning, and public relations. John has presented both nationally and internationally on public policy as it relates to English language education, and has written extensively on issues of education policy. John has a BA in Political Science from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, a Master’s of Professional Studies in Public Leadership from The George Washington University in Washington, DC, and has earned the Certified Association Executive designation from the American Society of Association Executives.
David Cutler is the Policy and Communications Specialist at TESOL International Association. David's functions at TESOL include drafting relevant policy statements, regulatory comments, and press releases, coordinating communications efforts across TESOL's departments, tracking policy issues affecting English learners and teachers across the United States and internationally, and planning and implementing TESOL's annual Advocacy & Policy Summit held each June in Washington, DC. David holds a BA in Social Studies Education from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, and a Master of Public Administration in Social Policy from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
