From Problematizing to Empowering: Liberating Programs for Multilingual Learners
Opportunities to create learning communities for multilingual learners exist when all stakeholders are committed to student success. Understanding the “why” and the “how” are imperative since there are policy implications that directly impact students and their teachers. Recommendations for advocating, prioritizing, and customizing approaches to program models for multilingual students will be provided.
Ayanna Cooper, Ed.D., is a consultant, U.S. Department of State English Language Specialist alumna, and current TESOL International Association board member. She is the author of several publications including And Justice for ELs: A Leader’s Guide to Creating and Sustaining Equitable Schools
, Black Immigrants in the United States
(co-editor with Ibrahim), and serves as Language Magazine’s Pass the Mic Series editor. In 2021 she was nominated as the Black English Professionals and Friends (BELPaF) of TESOL Member of the Year and as one of 30@30 by the U.S. Department of State for her diversity, equity, and inclusion contributions to the field.
