Nile TESOL: New Beginnings

Kathleen Saville, Board Member, Nile TESOL

Nile TESOL is a new affiliate in Egypt. Though we are partially affiliated with the American University in Cairo (AUC) and our board meetings take place in Cairo, our targeted membership is countrywide. Our board of directors, with Dr. Robert Williams as president, has been busy since our inception in the fall of 2008 with first-year activities, including planning for our first conference, which will take place in Cairo February 2–4, 2010, in conjunction with the well-established AUC Skill Conference.

Our future plans include offering an ongoing series of professional development workshops. We are working to develop workshops on technology in ELT and ELT conference presentation skills, such as abstract writing and oral/PowerPoint presentations. Our first Nile TESOL cosponsored event, “Writing Conference Proposals,” took place on May 20, 2009, at AUC’s New Cairo campus.

We are also pleased to coordinate our efforts with board members from the British Council in Cairo and the Office of English Language Programs, U.S. Embassy Cairo. In addition, our board members currently represent higher education in Egypt in both public and private sectors and secondary schools. We are still looking to fill board membership with representatives from primary schools and varying entities associated with English language instruction such as migrant and refugee education.
