The Betty Azar Travel Grants for Practicing ESL/EFL Teachers

Who's Eligible?

Practicing ESL/EFL teachers and teacher trainers who are also active TESOL members and who need financial support to attend the annual TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo.

Purpose

To support the professional development of ESL/EFL teachers by making it possible for more teachers to attend the annual TESOL convention.

The Travel Grants are funded by a generous contribution from long-time TESOL member Betty Azar.

Award

A minimum of 10 grants of US$1,500 each to pay the costs of attending a TESOL convention, including travel, accommodations and registration fees. Total number of grants will depend on annual grant funding levels.

Criteria

Applications are evaluated on the basis of
  • your reasons for wanting to attend the TESOL convention
  • your commitment and contributions to ESL/EFL teaching
  • your financial need
Preference is given to individuals who have never attended a TESOL convention. Download the evaluation rubric.

To Apply Online

To complete the online application process, you will need the following information. You are strongly encouraged to gather this information before you begin the application. That way, you can fill out the application completely, and you will not have to go back and fill in items later.

Short Answer Section

  • Explain the reasons you want to attend the TESOL convention (250 words)
  • Explain past and current contributions and commitment to ESL/EFL teaching (250 words)
  • List the TESOL conventions you have attended
  • Explain your financial need and your opportunities for receiving financial support for professional development from your institution, publisher, or other sources (250 words)

Resumé/CV

You will be asked to upload a current resumé/CV.

Two Letters of Recommendation

You will be asked to provide contact email addresses for the people writing letters of recommendation for you. They will receive an email message from awards@tesol.org at the address you provide. The message will invite them to upload their letters of recommendation directly to the application system. The email request will not be sent until you "complete and finalize" your application. Letters submitted by the applicant will not be accepted.

Please ask your letter writers to watch for a message from awards@tesol.org. To ensure that they receive the message, please ask them to add awards@tesol.org to their contacts or to their spam whitelist. If they do not receive the message, please send a message to TESOL Awards. Letters of recommendation should
  • be written in English and by a professional who can describe your work and your professional activities
  • describe your work, contributions, and commitment to the field

Accepting applications starting 1 July. All applications and supporting documents must be received by 1 October.

2022 Recipients

pic_4 Chi Anestin Lum is a Cameroonian EFL teacher. She is also a Teacher Trainer for British Council’s English Connects project and a multiple award winner: TransformELT’s Model Teacher, 2020; Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement, Spring 2021; Sub-Saharan Africa Lesson Plan Competition winner 2021; and IELTS Morgan Terry Memorial 2022, amongst others.  
20211203_165656 Dovlet Kakabayev is an English teacher in a specialized high school from Dashoguz, Turkmenistan. Having 13 years of teaching-administrative experience in the Higher and Secondary Education sectors of his country, Dovlet holds Bachelor's degree in Linguistics and a Master's in Jurisprudence. He is IREX Community Solutions Program alum and its Selection Committee member. 
ozgehan_ustuk Ozgehan Ustuk (Ph.D.) is an EFL teacher and teacher educator currently working in Turkey. He is interested in practitioner inquiry. Ozgehan engages in action research based on his own teaching practice and facilitates research-based professional development programs. He is the incoming chair of TESOL's Research Professional Council. 
image2011210925_1.jpeg Prakash Chandra Giri is the Principal at Goodwill Activity School and a lecturer in English at Gupteshwor Mahadev Multiple Campus, both in Pokhara, Nepal. He is also a research scholar at Nepal Open University, Nepal. He was an English Access Micro-Scholarship instructor for about four years in Nepal.  
photo_20211206_125136 Tshering Dema is an English educator teaching in the semi-urban part of Bhutan. She earned her Master's degree in TESL from English and Foreign Language University in India. Tshering is a powerful force in the workplace, inspiring students to work hard and succeed with her optimistic attitude and never-ending energy.
