More About This Course

Although language teachers understand that the most significant skill for many learners may be speaking, a distinct challenge in teaching ESL/EFL online is working with speaking and real-time communication. This course addresses current capabilities in real-time voice communication over the Internet.

You will We explore ways to make this aspect of language teaching come alive in real-time in an online context. You will begin with readings in this area to understand the background. During group hands-on work, you will examine and practice with useful applications for real-time speaking. These include voice email, voice discussion boards, web conferencing, and instant messaging and conferencing with voice using Yahoo! Messenger and Skype. Each application is considered individually in a hands-on approach that will enable you to work on speaking skills in real-time with your students worldwide.

What Will I Learn?

  • Survey and discuss current capabilities in real-time communication online
  • Download and practice using voice-enabled messenger services such as Yahoo! Messenger, and VoIP application Skype
  • Research and report on sophisticated web conferencing software and other real-time virtual environments

About the Instructor

Emily Reynolds is an ESOL consultant and academic director at located in Boulder, Colorado, USA, where she designs and delivers online courses in business English for international business people. The former director of business English programs at the Economics Institute, University of Colorado, she has taught, designed curriculum and courses, directed programs, and written nine ESL textbooks over the last 30 years. Her latest book English for Global Business (University of Michigan Press) recently won TESOL’s Materials Development Award. Emily founded BizEnglish in 1997, and since then has been working online and face-to-face to deliver language and teacher training courses.
