TESOL International Association recently sent a letter supporting the
Reaching English Learners Act, S. 3408, which serves as the senate companion bill to
H.R. 4838, and was introduced by
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV). The bill’s companion in the U.S. House of Representatives was drafted and introduced by
Rep. Jim Langevin
Addressing the growing number of English learners across the United States, as well as the shortage of qualified English language teachers that many states are facing, the bill proposes new federal grants for the training of English language teachers, as well as the development of partnerships between institutions of higher education that prepare future teachers and local education agencies.
TESOL is thankful for the opportunity to be engaged during the development and introduction of this critical piece of legislation that, when passed, will improve the educational experiences of English learners and teachers across the United States.
