by David Cutler | 12/17/2018
Alexandria, VA (17 December 2018) – TESOL International Association announced today that Deena Boraie is the 2019 recipient of the James E. Alatis Award for Service to TESOL. The award honors outstanding and extended service by TESOL members at international, regional, and local levels. The award will be presented to Boraie at the James E. Alatis Plenary during the 2019 TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Deena Boraie, former president of TESOL International Association (2013–2014), served on the TESOL Board of Directors, as well as the TESOL Standards and Awards Committees, and was a founding member of EGYPTESOL. In 2016, she was selected as one of TESOL’s 50 at 50, individuals who have made key contributions to the TESOL profession in the past 50 years. Boraie currently serves as Vice President of Student Life at The American University in Cairo. She has taken on numerous leadership roles within TESOL International Association, EGYPTESOL, and NileTESOL, and is a sought after speaker in the field.

“It is an honor to recognize former TESOL President Deena Boraie with the 2019 Alatis Award,” said TESOL President Luciana C. de Oliveira. “Professor Boraie has been an active member of TESOL for nearly three decades, was the first Egyptian President of TESOL, and is a role model for the association. I had the pleasure of serving on the TESOL Board of Directors when Deena was president and experienced first-hand her knowledge, expertise, and advocacy, all key aspects of our work as ELT professionals,” de Oliveira concluded.

The James E. Alatis Award for Service to TESOL was established in 1987 to honor James E. Alatis for his 21 years of devoted service as TESOL's first executive director. Alatis was a charter member of TESOL International Association and dean emeritus of the School of Languages and Linguistics at Georgetown University.
