TESOL International Association applauds the recent decision by the Supreme Court of the United States to block the administration from adding a citizenship question to the 2020 Census and will continue to advocate for a fair and inclusive census until this issue is ultimately resolved.
As TESOL stated in its comments submitted to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the addition of a citizenship question would undoubtedly lead to a chilling effect on census participation, resulting in undercounts in already underserved communities across the country, and would negatively impact the accuracy of federal education funding formulas.
