TESOL Supports SPELL Act in U.S. Congress

by David Cutler | 09/18/2019

TESOL International Association recently sent a letter endorsing the Supporting Providers of English Language Learning (SPELL) Act (H.R. 4389) to the legislation's author, Representative Jim Langevin (D-RI).

The SPELL Act would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 to provide up to $17,500 in student loan forgiveness to English language teachers, an increase from the current total of $5,000. Additionally, this bill denotes English language teachers as highly valued educators by putting them on the same level as math, science, and special education teachers who are currently eligible for $17,500 in student debt forgiveness.

TESOL looks forward to working with all members of the U.S. Congress to advance this bill and further support English language teachers.
