TESOL International Association sends its support and compassion to the people of Puerto Rico in the wake of the devastating earthquakes and ongoing aftershocks affecting the island. On behalf of our Board of Directors, volunteers, members, and staff, the Association stands in solidarity with our affiliate, Puerto Rico TESOL, and with the Puerto Rican people as they prepare to rebuild and resume their lives after these destructive events.
For those interested in contributing aid, Charity Watch and Charity Navigator have published lists of organizations accepting donations to support relief efforts.
Our colleagues at PR TESOL report that their greatest needs are for articles of personal hygiene and other necessities. They have established a disaster response page to highlight the needs of their community and their response to the earthquake.
Additionally, a group of ELT professionals from teacher associations in Latin America and the Caribbean are organizing an ELT Day for Puerto Rico-a 24-hour online teaching conference on 26 January-to raise awareness of the needs in Puerto Rico and raise funds through the Puerto Rico Region of the American Red Cross. The Twitter hashtag, #ELTDay4PuertoRico has been established to share information about this event.
