TESOL International Association (TESOL) applauds today’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) to block the Trump Administration from ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The court’s ruling protects the immigration status of the over 800,000 Dreamers who came to the United States as undocumented immigrants at a young age, many of whom are English learners.
Dreamers make countless positive contributions to their local communities and the economy, serving as teachers, military personnel, and small business owners. It is estimated that over the next decade, Dreamers will contribute over $460 billion to the U.S. economy. Furthermore, as the world continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, over 27,000 DACA recipients work as frontline health care workers, providing critical medical care to patients across the United States.
TESOL has a long history of advocating of the rights of Dreamers and other undocumented immigrants. While the SCOTUS ruling is a strong strep forward, the Association continues to call on Congress to legislate a permanent solution to protect the rights of Dreamers and provide a pathway to citizenship.
