TESOL International Association applauds a recent U.S. Federal District Court decision that rejected President Trump’s memo that sought to remove undocumented immigrants from the final 2020 U.S. Census count. The president’s actions regarding the participation of undocumented immigrants in the 2020 Census continue to be reprehensible and harmful to English learners and TESOL educators across the United States. Public schools are required by law to serve all students, regardless of immigration status. As public education funding formulas are determined by the latest Census numbers, an undercount would be detrimental to the nation’s public education system.
TESOL International Associations calls on President Trump and the U.S. Department of Commerce to accept the court’s decision and ensure that everyone living in the United States, regardless of immigration status, is fairly counted in the 2020 Census.
