Federico Salas-Isnardi Named Recipient of 2021 James E. Alatis Award for Service to TESOL

TESOL International Association (TESOL) is pleased to announce that Federico Salas-Isnardi is the 2021 recipient of the James E. Alatis Award for Service to TESOL. The award honors outstanding and extended service by TESOL members at international, regional, and local levels. The award will be presented to Salas-Isnardi at the James E. Alatis Plenary during the virtual 2021 TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo.  

An active TESOL member since 1992, Salas-Isnardi has enjoyed a successful career as an educator, advocate, and diversity trainer in Houston, Texas, USA. Arriving in the United States from Argentina over 35 years ago, Salas-Isnardi has dedicated himself to advocating for critical social causes, including equity and diversity in the TESOL profession and LGBTQ+ rights. Highlights of Salas-Isnardi‘s prior service to the Association includes serving as co-chair of the Social Responsibility Interest Section in 2019, and serving as a member of the Adult Education Advocacy Task Force in 1995, Advocacy Task Force in 2004, and Diversity Committee in 2008. Currently, Salas-Isnardi serves on TESOL’s Diverse Voices Task Force, where he uses his knowledge and expertise to help strengthen the Association’s efforts in cultivating  diverse leaders and developing a more inclusive community.

While emphasizing Salas-Isnardi’s dedication to the Association, TESOL President Deborah Short commented, “Federico Salas-Isnardi fully exemplifies the spirit of the James E. Alatis award. He has been an active leader in the TESOL community for many years and promotes the mission and values of the association. In these trying times, his passion, good cheer, and advocacy for English language teachers and learners is a both a welcome salve and a needed voice.”  

The James E. Alatis Award for Service to TESOL was established in 1987 to honor James E. Alatis for his 21 years of devoted service as TESOL's first executive director. Alatis was a charter member of TESOL International Association and dean emeritus of the School of Languages and Linguistics at Georgetown University
