TESOL International Association (TESOL) has signed-on to a series of letters urging various state and federal officials to postpone WIDA ACCESS for English Learners testing to a future date during the 2021 school year. As part of its advocacy efforts, TESOL
previously issued a statement outlining the association's concerns over current plans to begin in-person testing as early as January 2021.
TESOL joined
The National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE),
Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Multicultural Education Training and Advocacy, Inc. (META),
Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, and
Lawyers for Civil Rights and the Center for Law and Education in letters to the
Office of English Language Acquisition within the U.S. Department of Education, as well as state education officials in Virginia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. These states had the earliest testing dates, scheduled to begin on 4 January 2021.
TESOL will continue to monitor the situation regarding WIDA ACCESS for English Learners testing and update its webpage and social media channels with any future developments. Advocates should also continue to visit the
TESOL Advocacy Action Center for future action alerts.
