TESOL Statement on U.S. Capitol Building Attack

Both shocked and brokenhearted, TESOL International Association (TESOL) staff and members watched as the violent attacks unfolded at the United States Capitol Building yesterday in Washington, DC, USA, mere miles from its headquarters. The inadequate response to these attacks also left many questions unanswered and stood in stark contrast to responses by law enforcement to non-white crowds. 

In no uncertain terms, TESOL condemns these, and all violent actions. What occurred on Capitol Hill was not a protest, but a physical and moral assault on the democratic process and principles that TESOL and many of its members cherish and revere. This attack not only denigrated an American democracy that countless other nations have aspired to, but stained the ideals of the U.S. Constitution and the peaceful transfer of power that has been practiced and emulated for over 230 years.  

Sadly, violence, hatred, and divisiveness are nothing new in any society. In the United States, those seeds were planted many generations ago. And while progress has been made, it is abundantly clear that many individuals have continued to nurture and grow these feelings of hatred to the point where the current divisiveness rivals some of the darkest days in U.S. history.   

TESOL represents a unique community of language educators from around the world, united by the values that have guided the organization in its 54 years of existence. Respect is one of these values. We encourage our members to engage their learners in conversations about the events of 6 January that include multiple perspectives, and about the lessons we must draw from them.
