TESOL international Association (TESOL) applauds several of the executive orders recently issued by U.S. President Joe Biden. These executive orders included instructions to preserve the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, end the ban on travelers from predominately Muslim countries, and repeal the ban on cultural sensitivity training. TESOL strongly opposed the previous administration’s executive actions that attempted to
end the DACA program,
banned travelers from majority-Muslim countries, and forbid federal contractors and grantees (like TESOL) from
implementing diversity and inclusion trainings for staff.
The actions taken by the Biden-Harris Administration signal a new direction at the executive level and are positive steps forward in protecting the rights of English learners and international students, while advancing the movement for racial justice and equality in the United States. TESOL looks forward to continuing its advocacy work on behalf of these critical issues that impact countless English learners and English language professionals.
