On July 16, 2021, a federal district judge in Texas halted new applications for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status, ruling that the program was unlawful. The ruling also included a temporary stay so that current DACA recipients would not be affected, and their renewals could continue to move forward. DACA recipients (also known as Dreamers) are undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children and meet other criteria.
TESOL International Association is deeply saddened by this ruling and advocates for a swift and successful appeal. We also once again urge Congress to pass legislation that will provide a pathway to permanent citizenship for Dreamers. This could be accomplished through Senate Bill 264 – The American Dream and Promise Act of 2021.
Dreamers make significant contributions to the economy by contributing their skills to the military, healthcare, and academia, among other fields. They are our neighbors and colleagues and are valuable members of their communities. Many have been English learners in our schools and programs. Passage of “The American Dream and Promise Act” would ensure that Dreamers across the United States can continue to live, work, and study in the communities that they have made home throughout their young lives.
TESOL strongly urges its advocates in the United States to visit the
TESOL Advocacy Action Center to urge their members of Congress to pass the bipartisan legislation, S 264 - The American Dream and Promise Act of 2021, which will provide a pathway to permanent citizenship for Dreamers.
