FY2023 U.S. Federal Budget Proposal Includes Historic Increases for Programs Serving English Learners
With his proposed FY2023 federal budget, TESOL International Association (TESOL) applauds President Biden’s commitment to equity in education by requesting significant increases to fund essential programs that serve English learners (ELs) and their teachers in the United States.
TESOL was pleased to see historic proposed increases for Title I and Title III of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), both of which significantly impact ELs in U.S. schools, as well as a proposed increase for Title II of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which serves adult English learners. The Administration also requested a significant increase to the Office of Civil Rights within the U.S. Department of Education, which helps ensure the educational rights of English learners, and a small increase for Title II-A of ESSA, which funds professional development activities for in-service teachers, administrators, and school staff. Each of these programs help meet the needs of English learners and their teachers, and increased funding is much needed and long overdue.
TESOL International Association welcomes the Administration’s funding requests for programs serving ELs and stands ready to work with the president and the U.S. Congress to ensure that federally funded education programs meet the needs of English learners across the United States.
