Comparing Bilingual Education Approaches Across Different Cultural and Educational ContextsĀ

Peter Sayer is a professor of multilingual language education at The Ohio State University. His work is in educational sociolinguistics, with a focus on how language ideologies and identities shape multilingual education. He has more than 75 publications, including the book Tensions and Ambiguities in English Language TeachingĀ (Routledge, 2012), on topics such as translanguaging, linguistic landscape, and social class and language teaching. He is the past editor of TESOL Journal, and a former Fulbright Scholar (Mexico, Peru) and U.S. State Department English Language Specialist (Philippines). He is currently the co-director of Buckeye Language Education Resource (BuckLER) Center.

Ya-Chen Chien is an Associate Professor at the National Taipei University of Education. Her research and teaching focus on bilingual education, technology-enhanced language learning, and teacher education. She investigates how digital tools and instructional design can create equitable and engaging language learning experiences, particularly in EFL contexts. As principal investigator of Ministry of Education–funded projects, Dr. Chien has advanced research and practice in bilingual education and sustainability. She served as Chair of TESOL International Association’s Computer-Assisted Language Learning Interest Section (CALL-IS) from 2021 to 2024 and, since March 2025, has been serving as Strand Coordinator for Digital Learning and Technology. Her work continues to promote inclusive and innovative approaches to bilingual and digital English language education.

Teacher Preparation for Multilingual Realities

Timothy Vetere-EarleyĀ is a Clinical Associate Professor of Teacher Education and Bilingual/ESOL Education at the University of Florida. He previously coordinated both the Elementary Education teacher preparation program and the master’s ESOL/Bilingual Education program, where he championed innovative, equity-focused curriculum and strong school district partnerships. Guided by Vygotskian socio-cultural theory, his teaching and research emphasize preparing educators to deliver culturally and linguistically sustaining instruction that supports diverse learners.
An active scholar and leader, Timothy has published and presented nationally and internationally and serves in professional organizations such as the Association of Teacher Educators and the National Association of Multicultural Education (NAME). His contributions have been recognized with honors including the Rosser Educator Excellence Award, University of Flordia's College of Education's Faculty Advising/Mentor of the Year Award, and Undergraduate Teacher of the Year. He earned his bachelor’s at Ball State University, master’s in TESOL/Applied Linguistics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Ph.D. at Penn State.
