TESOL Statements & Action

Advocacy, Grounded in Mission and Values

Advocacy is central to TESOL International Association’s mission to support English language educators and the multilingual learners, families, and communities they serve around the world. When we speak or act, we do so guided by our shared values of equity, access, professionalism, and respect for linguistic and cultural diversity.

TESOL advocacy is mission-driven and guided by board-endorsed decision-making tools and resources. These frameworks help ensure our actions are thoughtful, transparent, and aligned with our Board approved positions and strategic priorities.

How We Advocate

TESOL engages in advocacy through multiple avenues to affect change and support those impacted :

  • Public Comment
When policies or events affect English language teaching or multilingual learners of English, TESOL may issue public comments, both in support of policies that advance our mission and in opposition to those that cause harm.
  • Position Statements
TESOL’s board-approved position statements articulate the association’s stance on key issues such as teacher education, immigration, social responsibility, and the ELT profession. These statements serve as a beacon for educators, advocates, and policymakers.
  • Advocacy Action
Through grassroots campaigns, petitions, and our Advocacy Action Center, TESOL supports members, affiliates, and allies in raising their voices on issues that affect ELT, learners, schools, and communities.
  • Advocacy Tools & Resources
Drawing on the expertise of our members and the field, TESOL curates and shares research, guidance, and practical tools to support educators and multilingual learners in varied contexts.
  • Global Member Support
TESOL recognizes that advocacy needs differ by region, united in the belief that all have the right to learn English and to have our linguistic and cultural assets upheld. We support global advocacy through initiatives such as the Global Membership Fund, direct outreach, resources for affiliates, and context-responsive support.
  • Direct Support
When policies or events affect our profession, its members, or learners, we may extend support directly to those impacted, offering additional resources and guidance specific to the issue.

TESOL regularly scans world events and political actions for impacts on the field and support our affiliates’ advocacy efforts. We also invite members and partners to submit an Advocacy Action Request if they feel we’ve missed an action.
