ELT Leadership Management Certificate Program

The ELT Leadership Management Certificate Program provides leadership training for ELT professionals in various kinds of ELT organizations and institutions. It will be especially useful to those in leadership, administrative, or management roles. You do not have to be a member to attend.

TESOL’s courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no live events and you can log in at any time. Participants are expected to spend up to 10 hours per week on the coursework.

There are no additional textbooks needed for the course. All materials will be offered via the online course platform.

Gain the training necessary to take on a leadership, administrative, or management role in your ELT organization or institution.

Goals of the Program

Participants will gain awareness and learn about leadership and management strategies related to five key areas: qualities of effective leaders, strategic planning, leadership for teacher change, time management, and leading meetings.

Throughout the program, participants will develop components of a leadership/management action plan they can implement upon return to their institutions.

Participants will learn about:

QUALITIES OF EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP
  • Reflect on their leadership styles
  • Reflect on their strengths and areas to improve as ELT leaders and administrators
  • Learn about leadership roles and their impact on the decision making and the effectiveness of the educational institutions
  • Choose the leadership styles that are most appropriate in different situations
STRATEGIC PLANNING
  • Understand the goals and process of strategic planning
  • Learn the steps to develop a vision and mission statements
  • Learn how to conduct an internal analysis of their institutions
  • Learn how to conduct an external analysis of the institutional environment and the competition
  • Start developing a strategic plan for their institutions
LEADING TEACHER DEVELOPMENT
  • Reflect on your beliefs about teacher supervision
  • Explain characteristics of effective teachers
  • Formulate a set of professional development activities that can improve teaching
  • Guide teachers in the development of their own Personal Professional Development Plan
MANAGING TIME AND MEETINGS EFFECTIVELY
  • Analyze how they spend time as administrators
  • Identify challenges they face when managing time and meetings
  • Identify ways how time is wasted and techniques to improve their time management
  • Discuss how to manage meetings productively

ELT professionals at all levels who are currently in a leadership, administrative, or management role in their institution or organization, or who want training in these areas.

Instructors

Dr. Fernando Fleurquin is the Director of Marketing, Communications, and Stakeholder Relations at Michigan Language Assessment. With over 30 years of experience as an ESL/EFL teacher, teacher educator, writer, assessment specialist, program evaluator, and administrator, Dr. Fleurquin is also a medical doctor, has a master’s in Marketing and Business, and an Ed.D. in Higher Education from the University of North Texas. His areas of interest include assessment, standards, leadership, online education, and program administration.

Dr. Christine Coombe has a PhD in Foreign/Second Language Education from The Ohio State University. She is currently on the English and Liberal Studies faculty at Dubai Men’s College in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. She has managed assessment programs for the past 20 years. In 2008, she co-edited a volume on leadership skills and strategies in ELT. Christine served as TESOL International Association President 2011–2012.

Lic. Silvia Laborde has over 30 years of experience in the EFL field, almost 20 of which she was Academic Director. She is currently a Professor at the State University in Uruguay. She holds a Diploma in Educational Management from Universidad ORT, Uruguay, and has a demonstrated history of working in the professional training & coaching industry. Her areas of interest include educational management, hybrid pedagogy, learning analytics, and educational technology. Silvia served as TESOL International Association Board Member from 2016-2019.
