TESOL International Association: Guidelines for Issuing Public Statements

by TESOL International Association |

TESOL International Association carefully considers whether to issue a public statement based on the following criteria

  • Alignment with Our MissionValues or Commitments: The issue must reflect TESOL’s core mission, values, and commitments.
  • Relevance to the Field: The topic must have a direct impact on the field of English language teaching or on multilingual learners of English.
  • Potential for Meaningful Impact: TESOL’s response must offer measurable value to the field and to the global English language community.

When these criteria are met, TESOL may issue a formal public statement or comment. We recognize that many global events evoke strong personal beliefs and deep empathy. However, to remain effective, TESOL must stay focused on its core purpose: advancing excellence in English language teaching worldwide.

For issues that do not meet the above criteria, TESOL may choose not to issue a public statement. However, this does not preclude TESOL from taking other meaningful actions to support affected individuals and communities. These actions may include:

  • Extending membership benefits to impacted members
  • Curating and sharing relevant resources
  • Providing guidance on how others can offer support or donations
  • Collaborating with affiliates in affected regions
  • And other responsive initiatives

TESOL welcomes input from its members and the broader community. Anyone may submit a formal request for TESOL to take action. All submissions are acknowledged, reviewed, and evaluated using our published criteria.
