TESOL Position Statement: AI for the ELT Profession

TESOL International Association calls for ethical and responsible integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in English language teaching and learning.

This position statement serves as a valuable resource and foundation for the English language teaching profession in the use and policies of AI, highlighting the vital role of educators in the language learning process.

TESOL extends its appreciation to the following individuals in the drafting of this important statement: Dr. Quanisha Charles, associate professor of English, North Central College; Dr. Christina Kitson, associate professor of English, University of Central Missouri; Christina Cavage, director of curriculum and teaching excellence, Immerse; and Brent Warner, professor of ESL, Irvine Valley College.

The TESOL International Association board of directors approved this statement at the October 2025 board meeting.
