Call for Volunteers: Convention Program Strand Coordinators

Serve as a Convention Program Strand Coordinator

The Conferences Professional Council is currently seeking 1 strand coordinators and 6 assistant strand coordinators to work on the 2020 and 2021 convention programs. Coordinators will be appointed for two years, beginning in April 2019. To be eligible, you must be a member of TESOL International Association in good standing.

The following strands have openings for the 2020 and 2021 conventions.
  • Advocacy and Social Justice - ASC
  • Digital Learning and Technology - ASC
  • Listening, Speaking, and Pronunciation - ASC
  • Reading, Writing, and Literacy - ASC
  • Language Assessment - SC + ASC
  • Teacher Education - ASC

About the Coordinators

Strand coordinators and assistant strand coordinators work in close collaboration with the TESOL Conference Services staff, the Conferences Professional Council, and TESOL Interest Section chairs, and play an instrumental role in developing a vibrant convention program that responds to changing trends in the field.

Strand Coordinator (SCs) and Assistant Strand Coordinators (ASCs) work in close collaboration and cooperation with the TESOL Conference Services staff, the Conferences Professional Council and TESOL Interest Section Chairs, and play an instrumental role in generating a vibrant Convention program responding to changing trends in the field. As a Strand Coordinator, you will have the unique opportunity to make active contributions to the generation of TESOL’s Annual Convention. Serving as a key member of the Annual Convention team, Strand Coordinators and Assistant Strand Coordinators:
  • assist with recruiting qualified reviewers who will review proposals in their respective areas of interest for the TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo.
  • vet qualified reviewers who will review proposals in their respective areas of interest for the TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo.
  • provide specialized strand-related input to reviewers regarding expectations and commenting strategies.
  • oversee comments made to proposal submitters for professionalism and alignment with numerical ratings.
  • designate reviewed proposals (as accept, reject or alternate) based on the reviewers’ scores and comments, as well as the session allotment based on number of proposals received overall.
Term of Service
Both Strand Coordinators and Assistant Strand Coordinators shall be determined through an application process by the Conferences Professional Council. Strand Coordinators shall serve for 1-2 years as an assistant strand coordinator (ASC), and 1-2 years as strand coordinator (SC) and can re-apply, if desired. It is hoped that this will give continuity to and sustainability in the strand leadership and administration. For both of these positions, the application should solicit information regarding professional experience and expertise in the strand, leadership experience and involvement in relevant tasks and projects, ability to work cooperatively with various teams, and availability throughout the entire process.

  • Provide basic strand-specific input to reviewers
  • Uphold and advance the quality of comments provided to proposal submitters
  • Assist TESOL Conference Services staff and Conferences Professional Council in finalizing the Convention program
  • Works closely with the SC to
    • Recruit and vet reviewers for their strands
    • Provide basic strand-specific input to reviewers in his/her specific focus
    • Uphold and advance the quality of comments provided to proposal submitters
    • Assist TESOL Conference Services staff and Conferences Professional Council in finalizing the Convention program
