Serve on the Standards Professional Council

TESOL International Association seeks individuals to serve on the Standards Professional Council (SPC). The term for these appointments will be from 1 November to 31 October each year, with the option to renew at the end of the appointment. The maximum continuous service period on the SPC is three years. To be eligible, you must be a member of TESOL International Association in good standing. 

About the Standards Professional Council

The Standards Professional Council (SPC) supports TESOL International Association in advancing the quality and expertise in the field of English language teaching through standards for teaching and learning. The Council advises the Association on strategy and supports the implementation of its strategic direction as it relates to standards. This is done by providing review and comment on educational standards and guidance on emerging issues that are relevant to the profession of English language teaching, thereby raising the visibility, feasibility, and practicality of the Association’s standards and overall offerings.

Expertise and Experience Needed

The SPC seeks the following attributes, experience, knowledge, and/or skills
  • Teaching experience in the TESOL field
  • Knowledge of the needs of TESOL professionals
  • Knowledge and experience in working with educational standards
  • Specific knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following:
    • K-12 ESL education
    • Teacher preparation
    • Adult ESOL instruction
    • English as a foreign or additional language
  • Familiarity with instructional standards for English learners in programs that include K-12, adult, and community college/university ESL instruction
  • Ability and willingness to collect information on current developments in education as it pertains to English language teaching, English learners, and teacher preparation
  • Capacity to work with others, often in different time zones and locations around the globe
  • Clear verbal and written communication
  • Timeliness, with an adherence to deadlines

Commitment

  • Council members are encouraged to attend the TESOL convention and fully participate in all official meetings of the council. On the day before the convention, council members attend a morning Leadership Briefing, followed by an SPC meeting. Council members are also encouraged to attend the Town Meeting and the TESOL Annual Business Meeting.
  • Council members are expected to dedicate approximately 4-8 hours per month to the work of the Council. The number of hours may be more or less depending on the number of projects and their varying stages. 
  • Throughout the year, council members are also actively involved in specific work groups and subcommittee tasks, and communicate frequently to meet deadlines. Tasks may include, but are not limited to
    • actively participating in online discussions
    • responding to occasional requests for comment and feedback on draft standards and other policy documents in a timely manner
    • responding to queries from the Chair in a timely manner
    • performing other tasks as necessary

Current Projects

The SPC is currently working on several tasks representing association-wide needs.
