TESOL Awards for International Participation

Who's Eligible?

TESOL members who are
  • from a country outside the United States or Canada
  • submitting a proposal for the annual TESOL convention
  • presenting for the first time at the annual TESOL convention.
TESOL members currently living in the United States or Canada are not eligible. Preference will be given to applicants from countries underrepresented at the TESOL conventions.


To increase international participation at the annual TESOL convention.


Up to four awards in the amount of $2,500 to cover travel and lodging expenses to attend and present at the TESOL convention. This award is funded by the TOEFL Board of ETS.


Eligible proposals are evaluated according to
  • the significance of the topic as it relates to the field of second language acquisition and ESL/EFL teaching
  • the contribution of the proposal to the field of TESL/TEFL
  • originality and creativity in concept
  • relevance and broad impact.

To Apply

Applicants will submit their convention presentation title and description which should not be longer than 1,000 words. Important: All applications submitted for this award will be pre-screened to verify that the proposals on the applications were in fact accepted to be presented at the annual convention. Applications with rejected proposals will have to be disqualified.

2022 Recipients

 316a4808c24448008622f0895b96a3a0.jpeg Burcin Kagitci Yildiz is an EFL lecturer at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, where she also works as the co-director of the Academic Writing Center and helps organize institutional academic events. She is currently pursuing her PhD in ELT with a special interest in sociolinguistics and academic writing.

Her professional interest lies in pre-service teacher education, effective communication skills, autonomy-supportive teaching, and learners’ and teachers’ social and emotional development.  
nyc_pic  Toni McLaughlan is an English Communications instructor at HCT (UAE) and a United Nations communications intern. She is a trained assessment developer currently writing for Michigan Language Assessments. She holds an MA: Linguistics and MS Ed.: School Psychology. Presently, she is completing a Ph.D. in Higher Education at Lancaster University (UK).
