TESOL's Accessibility & Accommodations Policy

As part of TESOL's statement on diversity, equity, inclusion, and access, TESOL is committed to making our in-person and digital offerings accessible to all. It is TESOL's policy to hold events, meetings, programs, and conventions where attendees with disabilities feel welcome and are able to participate fully.

Additionally, we strive to comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to version 2.2, Level AA, and Section 508 standards for all TESOL websites. We are planning improvements to meet these standards and increase access to our websites for those who use assistive technology.

Frequently Asked Questions

TESOL offers a variety of accommodations for our event and program attendees. Examples of accommodations we can provide for virtual and in-person events include (but are not limited to):

  • Sign language interpretation
  • CART captioning/real-time captioning
  • Close vision/tactile signing interpretation
  • Braille event programs
  • Electronic documents compatible with screen readers
  • Print versions of presentations, including large print options (limited to presentations given by TESOL staff, board members, and keynotes; we encourage session presenters to create print versions but do not require them)
  • Advance information about venues, including venue ADA compliance, seating options, locations of quiet rooms, service animal relief areas, etc.
  • Gluten-free or allergy-free menu options at catered events
  • Personalized assistance with registration

We welcome requests for the following events:

We do not offer accommodations for events hosted by TESOL regional affiliates as these organizations operate independently of TESOL International Association. Please contact regional affiliates directly to inquire about access and accommodations.

We ask that accommodation requests be submitted a minimum of 2 weeks in advance of an event. This allows us time to schedule interpreters, prepare print materials, plan logistical information, and so on.

However, we encourage you to submit your request even if this window has closed as we still may be able to provide accommodations.

Yes! Attendees are welcome to bring personal care aides to events at no additional registration cost. At TESOL conventions, personal care aides may attend sessions and visit the exhibit hall with the attendee. To receive complimentary registration for your personal care aide, contact us either by using the form on this page, emailing access@tesol.org, or calling +1.703.518.2506.

Please note that TESOL cannot waive travel or lodging costs for personal care aides.

No, TESOL does not require proof of disability or a doctor's note for accommodations and will not ask about personal medical information.
