Using Social-Emotional Learning to Support Learners and Educators

Strengthen learning and well-being through social-emotional learning.

About the Social-Emotional Learning Micro-Credential Series

Build resilience in yourself and your learners through social-emotional learning (SEL) in this self-paced, hands-on micro-credential series. This series will equip you with research-informed strategies to practice self-care and build supportive, inclusive, and emotionally responsive learning environments.

SEL is no longer just "nice to have"; it is essential to student success. Yet most professional development resources treat it as a general education topic, leaving English language teachers without the context-specific tools they need. This series changes that. Each module connects SEL principles directly to the realities of language teaching, giving you practical strategies you can use immediately in your work.

What will I learn?

After completing modules in this series, you will be able to:

  • Identify the six fundamentals of social-emotional learning and explain how each applies to working with multilingual learners of English
  • Define the eight basic social-emotional needs that all people possess and recognize how they influence learning
  • Describe the physical, interpersonal, and organizational characteristics that make classrooms and schools more inclusive
  • Apply teacher wellness strategies that promote your own social-emotional resilience and support that of your students
  • Integrate social-emotional learning into lesson plans in meaningful and practical ways
  • Use monitoring and assessment approaches to evaluate students' social-emotional learning and your own SEL teaching practices

Choose a single module to focus on a specific skill or build a stronger foundation by combining multiple modules into a learning pathway.

Who should take this series?

This series is designed for English language teachers at any level, including primary, secondary, adult, or post-secondary education, as well as English language teacher educators. If you want to better support your learners' social and emotional development while strengthening your own well-being and teaching practice, this series is for you.
